Recommendations

Before session
  • There should be a 4-day wait between other forms of bodywork and your Bowen Technique session.
  • Progressively increase your water intake to 2 litres a day if you are able to.
 
Day of the session
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, both on the day of, and the day after your Bowen Technique session.

During the week after the session
  • Keep your hydration levels at about 2 litres of water per day.
  • Take a 20 minute walk minimum each day if your condition allows, to help integrate the changes your body is undergoing.
  • Avoid temperature extremes: No hot bath, cold shower, hard/power shower, sauna, hot tub, hot water bottle, heating pads, ice packs, electric blanket for at least a few days. A warm bath no longer than 10 min is ok. Showers :a gentle flow not too hot is OK.
  • Avoid other bodywork : massage, acupuncture, energy work for 5-7 days.​
​What shall I wear?

What is a session like?
In the first session we will begin with a brief health history and look at your posture. Then Bowen procedures will be chosen and performed. The procedures involve several sets of light touch rolling moves in precise areas up and down the body. Each move is performed with a comfortable pressure across ligaments, muscles, tendons or nerves to create gentle vibrations which travel to your brain via nerve pathways and fascia.
 
The practitioner pauses between each set creating a quiet space without interruption from the outside world thus allowing your brain to process signals and send out instructions for your body to reset and make the changes in muscular tone and alignment. So your brain is working with your body and it knows what is needed to activate your innate ability to heal.
Note: If a client is weak or overtaxed physically or mentally then reducing the quantity of procedures and/or increasing the length of pauses, allows for a better response.

​At the end of the session you will have time to rest while your body integrates the signals it has received.
 
What will it feel like during the session? 
During your Bowen session, you may experience sensations like heat, cold, tingling or pulsing in parts of the body. Or you might not feel any immediate sensations, which is fine too, everybody responds differently. Feeling relaxed or sleepy is another normal response experienced during and/or after treatment.
 
What should I expect from my session?
The effects of Bowen may be felt directly after the session, in some it may take a few days. Your body continues the process that began during your session up to 14 days afterwards but usually more acute in the first 7 days. About a week after the session it’s then possible to accurately analyse the effect of Bowen.
 
The procedures in the first session will be very basic, but often they can create such profound results that over the next several days you may feel some shifts and changes going on until you have a sense of better balance, grounding and well being. Some people may not feel considerable change but after some time realise their body feels pleasantly different.
 
What is the time period between sessions?
The body may continue to respond to a treatment session for between 5-10 days (and sometimes longer). Consequently, sessions are recommended on a weekly frequency.  
 
How many sessions do I need?
This is difficult to accurately predict because every individual heals at a different rate. Also the severity of the condition, the length of time that the condition has persisted, the number of conditions that the client is experiencing simultaneously and  whether the clients lifestyle is contributing to the condition, are all factors.

Usually if the problem is acute and has not been present for long, 1-3 sessions will be fine. If the condition is more chronic more sessions may be needed. Each person is different – usually three sessions are booked and treatment is reviewed on the third session. For conditions such as arthritis, MS, fibromyalgia or stroke, Bowen is very useful in managing the condition.

After the initial treatment plan is completed you may discuss future sessions for preventive maintenance, to prevent further problems, maintain posture and release stress and tension.

Is it safe? 
Because of its gentle application and it works with the healing processes of the body in a harmonious and mild manner, The Bowen Technique is completely safe and is suitable for the elderly, disabled, children and even babies. There is simply no possibility of harm when Bowen is performed in accordance with the Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia (BTAA) standards.
